Sophomore Class Guidance Meeting Recap
November 9, 2004

Ms. Gail Foster presented an overview of what we as sophomore parents need to know about our student's school, curriculum, testing and college search. She began with a reminder about the open door policy the BCA Guidance department encourages for both students and parents, and then addressed the following five major topics.
Transcripts  A sample transcript was distributed and reviewed, describing the notations in each section.
Course Request Form  A sample Course Request Form was distributed and reviewed. These are completed by students and signed by parents. As juniors, students are able to begin a different World Language, at an entry level. Ms. Foster also emphasized that the staff tries to accommodate all students' requests for electives, but the seniority order is senior, junior, sophomore and freshman. Please be sure your student returns his/her elective form by the due date. This helps the scheduling process run efficiently.
College Planning Calendar  A timeline was distributed as a loose guide for parents and students. In December the practice PSAT results will be returned and reviewed with the counselors. Students will look for techniques to make improvements where needed. On Thursday, May 5, the BCA College Fair will be held in the Gym. Parents and students are urged to attend. In May students should register for the June SAT II: subject tests in academic subjects that they will complete this year. Speak with the subject area teacher and counselor before registering.
College Resource Center  The College Center, open to both students and parents,  is a resource for general college information as well as news about summer programs and college scholarships.

Testing Soon after December, parents will receive the results of their student's practice PSAT. Students will receive their actual test booklet in school, which will help them study for the test next September. Our students should not take the SAT until January of their junior year. As we all know there will be changes to the SATs. An important change to note is that score choice is no longer an option. Every score is reported to colleges, so taking the SAT more than two or three times is not recommended.
